Our regular Starrett Drive Pin Punches are made of hardened, tempered steel to with stand heavy duty work, but at times are too hard and can damage softer materials. The Starrett B565 brass punch is ideal for these applications as they are much softer than the steel version. The obvious disadvantage of brass punches is the same as their advantage -they are much softer than hardened steel. Obviously, the brass is less able to stand up to years of hard use. Ideally, it is good to have sets of both types and use the brass punches only when there is the possibility of damage to the work piece.
